A series of unprecedented binaphthyl-osmium nanoparticles (OsNPs) with chiral modifiers were applied in the heterogeneous asymmetric dihydroxylation of alkenes. A remarkable size effect of the OsNPs, depending on the density of the covalent organic shells, on the reactivity and enantioselectivity of the dihydroxylation reaction was revealed. Successful recycling of the OsNPs was also demonstrated and high reaction efficiency and enantioselectivity were maintained.

A new phthalazine based chemosensor 3 was developed for the highly selective and sensitive detection of Co2+ in the mixed solvent system, CH3CN- H2O ( 1 : 1, v/ v). In the presence of Co2+, the colour of the solution 3 changed from yellow to green; the absorption maxima of 3 was red- shifted from 383 nm to 435 nm, and the fluorescence of 3 at 550 nm was significantly enhanced. The sensor 3 showed a detection limit down to 25 nM by forming a complex species with Co2+ in 1 : 1 stoichiometry. Furthermore, by means of confocal laser scanning microscopy experiments, it has demonstrated that it can be used as a fluorescent probe for monitoring Co2+ in living cells.

4-Substitutedphthalazines and phthalazinones: synthesis, characterization and beta-adrenergic blocking activity

Novel 4-(4-bromophenyl)phthalazine and phthalazinone derivatives connected through 2-propanol spacer to N-substituted piperazine residue were synthesized. All the new compounds were screened for their effect on beta-adrenergic blocking activity on the norepinephrine-induced precontracted aortic ring module. Blue highly fluorescent boron difluoride complexes based on phthalazine-pyridine

Three new boron difluoride complexes based on phthalazine-pyridine, denoted (6), (7) and (8), have been synthesized and their photophysical and electrochemical properties have been studied. Solutions of these new BF2-complexes exhibit an intense blue fluorescence under UV light at low concentrations. Fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) have been determined by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and decay times (tau) by semi-empirical methods. QYs of (6), (7) and (8) vary from 25% to 79%. HOMO and LUMO energy levels have been estimated by cyclic voltammetry and PL spectroscopy. Silver(I) complexes with quinazoline and phthalazine: synthesis, structural characterization and evaluation of biological activities

New silver.I) complexes with quinazoline (qz) and phthalazine (phtz), [Ag(NO3)(qz)](n) (1) and {[Ag(CH3CN)](2)(mu-phtz)(2)}[BF4](2) (2), have been synthesized and structurally characterized by using different spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The obtained results revealed that the reaction of AgNO3 with qz at room temperature in a 2 : 1 molar ratio led to the formation of the polynuclear complex 1. However, the reaction of AgBF4 with phtz under the same experimental conditions resulted in the formation of the dinuclear complex 2. The solution behaviour and air/light stability of these silver.I) complexes have been investigated. The complexes 1 and 2, along with the silver.I) salts used for their synthesis, were evaluated by in vitro antimicrobial studies against a panel of microbial strains that lead to many skin and soft tissue, respiratory, wound, and nosocomial infections. The obtained results indicate that all tested silver(I) compounds have good antibacterial activity with MIC values in the range from 1.5 to 15.6 mu g mL(-1) against the investigated strains. On the other hand, their antifungal activity against Candida albicans was moderate. In order to determine the therapeutic potential of 1 and 2, their antiproliferative effect on the normal human lung fibroblast cell line MRC5, hemolytic effect on red blood cells and embryotoxicity on zebrafish (Danio rerio) have also been evaluated.
