Although there is much interest in the use of azobenzenes (ABs) as molecular switches for biological and material science applications, there is still need for systematic rationalization of their photophysical properties determined at both experimental and theoretical level. We present here the (re-) evaluation of the properties of some AB derivatives in the context of their geometrical substitution (para or meta) and nature of substituent effects (i.e. electron-donating groups, EDGs or electron-withdrawing groups, EWGs). Results of comprehensive experimental studies of their photophysical properties, thermal stabilities and functioning in reducing environments are rationalized by DFT calculations. As the associated n-pi* bands of the trans (E) and cis (Z) isomers of the studied ABs overlap, it is difficult to obtain high cis-to-trans conversion, however we have proved that by manipulation of the substituents position, the content of the cis isomer at the photostationary state (PSS) could be enhanced up to 30%. Moreover, we show that the presence of -NHCO- group at para positions contributes to reducing the effective bond order of the azo group resulting in the reduction of the height of the energy barrier for conversion and reduces the half-life of the cis isomer. Finally, electron deficient ABs are found to be more stable under reducing environments.

The ring-opening copolymerization of carbon dioxide and epoxides is a useful means to make aliphatic polycarbonates and to add-value to CO2. Recently, the first heterodinuclear Zn(II)/Mg(II) catalyst showed greater activity than either homodinuclear analogue (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2015, 137, 15078-15081). Building from this preliminary finding, here, eight new Zn(II)/Mg(II) heterodinuclear catalysts featuring carboxylate co-ligands are prepared and characterized. The best catalysts show very high activities for copolymerization using cyclohexene oxide (TOF 1/4 8880 h 1, 20 bar CO2, 120 C, 0.01 mol% catalyst loading) or cyclopentene oxide. All the catalysts are highly active in the low pressure regime and specifically at 1 bar pressure CO2. The polymerization kinetics are analysed using in situ spectroscopy and aliquot techniques: the rate law is overall second order with a first order dependence in both catalyst and epoxide concentrations and a zero order in carbon dioxide pressure. The pseudo first order rate coefficient values are compared for the catalyst series and differences are primarily attributed to effects on initiation rates. The data are consistent with a chain shuttling mechanistic hypothesis with heterodinuclear complexes showing particular rate enhancements by optimizing distinct roles in the catalytic cycles. The mechanistic hypothesis should underpin future heterodinuclear catalyst design for use both in other (co) polymerization and carbon dioxide utilization reactions.

A formal C-H carboxylation of unactivated arenes using CO2 in green solvents is described. The present strategy combines a sterically controlled Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation followed by a Cu-catalyzed carboxylation of the in situ generated organoboronates. The reaction is highly regioselective for the C-H carboxylation of 1,3-disubstituted and 1,2,3-trisubstituted benzenes, 1,2- or 1,4-symmetrically substituted benzenes, fluorinated benzenes and different heterocycles. The developed methodology was applied to the late-stage C-H carboxylation of commercial drugs and ligands.

Preparation of an ordered mesoporous polypyrrole/carbon (PPy/OMC) composite has been described through a two-step nanocasting process using KIT-6 as a template. Characterization of the PPy/OMC nanocomposite by various analysis methods such as TEM, XRD, TGA, SEM and N-2 sorption confirmed the preparation of a material with ordered mesoporous structure, uniform pore size distribution, high surface area and high stability. This nanocomposite was then used for the immobilization of palladium nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were almost uniformly distributed on the support with a narrow particle size of 20-25 nm, confirmed by various analysis methods. Performance of the Pd@PPy/OMC catalyst was evaluated in the aerobic oxidation of various primary and secondary alcohols on water as a green solvent, giving the corresponding carboxylic acids and ketones in high yields and excellent selectivity. The catalyst could also be reused for at least 10 reaction runs without losing its catalytic activity and selectivity. High catalytic efficiency of the catalyst can be attributed to a strong synergism between the PPy/OMC and that of supported Pd nanoparticles.

An effective chiral GAP methodology for preparing alpha-aminomethyl enaminones through a (R)-CSA-catalyzed asymmetric aza-Baylis-Hillman reaction is reported. Excellent yields and high diastereoselectivity could be obtained under mild conditions and convenient GAP techniques. In this report, we demonstrate that the one-electron electrochemical oxidation of TEMPO-Me produces a powerful electrophilic methylating agent in situ. Our computational and experimental studies are consistent with methylation proceeding via a S(N)2 mechanism, with a strength comparable to the trimethyloxonium cation. A protocol is developed for the electrochemical methylation of aromatic acids using TEMPO-Me.
