The key event is the ruthenium-catalyzed regioselective olefin migration of dihydropyran allylic acetals to homoallylic acetals. In combination with other metal-catalyzed reactions, this new protocol led to the synthesis of beta-2,6-dideoxypyranoglycosides in a highly efficient manner. Using this sequential metal catalysis, various mono-, di-, and trisaccharide forms of beta-2,6-dideoxypyranoglycosides were prepared.

The present report describes an organocatalytic cascade reaction between 2-alkylidene benzo[b]thiophenone derivatives and enones in the presence of the Cinchona alkaloid amine. Spirobenzothiophenonic cyclohexane derivatives containing three stereocenters were prepared via one-step synthesis in yields ranging from 88 to 96% and in enantioselectivities (enantiomeric excess (ee)) ranging from 85 to 97%, with diastereoselectivities of approximately 14/2/1. Therefore, this method provides an efficient route for the synthesis of a new class of optically active 2-spirobenzothiophenones.

Surface-bonded zwitterionic stationary phases have shown highlighted performances in separation of polar and hydrophilic compounds under hydrophilic interaction chromatography mode. So, it would be helpful to evaluate the characteristics of zwitterionic stationary phases with different arranged charged groups. The present work involved the preparation and comparison of three zwitterionic stationary phases. An imidazolium ionic liquid was designed and synthesized, and the cationic and anionic moieties respectively possessed positively charged imidazolium ring and negatively charged sulfonic groups. Then, the prepared ionic liquid, phosphorylcholine and an imidazolium-based zwitterionic selector were bonded on the surface of silica to obtain three zwitterionic stationary phases. The selectivity properties were characterized and compared through the relative retention of selected solute pairs, and different kinds of hydrophilic solutes mixtures were used to evaluate the chromatographic performances. Moreover, the zwitterionic stationary phases were further characterized by the modified linear solvation energy relationship model to probe the multiple interactions. All the results indicated that the types and arrangement of charged groups in zwitterionic stationary phases mainly affect the retention and separation of ionic or ionizable compounds, and for interaction characteristics the contribution from n and pi electrons and electrostatic interactions displayed certain differences.

Cellulose graft copolymers are an effective way to endow new properties to cellulose substrate, as well the rigidity, regularity, and helicity of the cellulose backbone could induce the self-assembly of supramolecular structures. In this work, right-handed helical poly(phenyl isocyanide)s (PPIn) were grafted selectively onto C-6-cellulose. Alkyne-terminated PPIn was synthesized by living polymerization of right-handed phenyl isocyanide monomer using an alkyne-terminated palladium(II) complex as an initiator/catalyst, and were grafted onto the C-6 of the cellulose backbone (Cell 6 g PPIn) at various chain lengths using copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) click chemistry. We confirmed the successful grafting by liquid H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR, as well as solid C-13 NMR, FTIR, and GPC. After grafting onto cellulose, the right-handed chirality of PPIn was significantly increased by 111.2%. Additionally, the Cell 6 g PPIn exhibited better chiral recognition of L-PheDNSP than PPIn alone. Therefore, the helical cellulose backbone has enhanced effect on preferred helix of PPIn.

A simple, efficient, sustainable and economical method for the oxidation of alcohols and amines has been developed based on chloride, a sea abundant anionic catalyst for the practical synthesis of a wide range of carboxylic acids, ketones and imines. Oxidation of aromatic alcohols was carried out using NaCl (20 mol%) as the catalyst, NaOH (50 mol%) and aq. TBHP (4 equiv.) as the oxidant in 55-92% isolated yields. Oxidation of aromatic amines to imines was achieved by using only 20 mol% of NaCl and aq. TBHP (4 equiv.) in 32-93% isolated yields. The chlorine species formed during the reaction as the active oxidation catalyst has been identified as ClO2- for alcohols and ClO-/ClO2- for amines by control experiments. This method is mostly free from chromatographic purification, which makes it suitable for large-scale synthesis. We have scaled up to 30 gram scale the synthesis of carboxylic acids and imines in good yields and have also carried out efficiently this new method using filtered sea water as the solvent and catalyst.
