Bronsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs) have been used as catalyst and solvent in organic synthesis, due to their negligible volatility, remarkable solubility, good catalytic activity, and easily structurally tunable properties. In the present study, we have investigated the catalytic efficiency of economically viable ionic liquids bearing different cations pyridinium ([PyH](+) and triethylammonium [TEAH](+)) for the esterification of aromatic acid with various aliphatic alcohols and crossed aldol condensation of aromatic aldehydes with cyclohexanone under ambient condition. We also examined the effect of various process parameters on the yield of aromatic esters and alpha,alpha’-bis(arylidene)cycloalkanones.

A one-pot three-component reaction involving nitroarenes, (hetero)arylboronic acids, and potassium pyrosulfite leading to sulfonamides was described. A broad range of sulfonamides bearing different reactive functional groups were obtained in good to excellent yields through sequential C-S and S-N coupling that does not require metal catalysts.

Lignin is a biodegradable, abundant and renewable natural polymer on earth. In this study, deep eutectic solvents (DESs)-modified lignin heterogeneous catalysts were prepared for the first time via a facile acid-base interaction between choline chloride (ChCl) and p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) or its derivatives, which were used to efficiently catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 and terminal epoxides under green and mild conditions. Among them, lignin-ChCl-PABA was found to exhibit the highest catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of epoxides in the presence of 1.0 MPa of CO2 while retaining high selectivity, which far outperformed those achieved on the homogeneous EDSs catalytic system. A series of cyclic carbonates could be obtained in high yields (90-99%), and lignin-ChCl-PABA was stable and reusable for the cycloaddition reaction (84% yield after 5 recycles). The attaching DES of ChCl/PABA onto the functional lignin increased the catalytic activity and also made the catalyst easier to recycle from the reaction mixture. The -OH and -NH2 groups on the surface of lignin-ChCl-PABA played a very important role in the acceleration of the cycloaddition reaction under solvent free conditions.

We report here the stereoselective bioreduction of -nitro ketones catalyzed by ketoreductases (KREDs) with publicly known sequences. YGL039w and RasADH/SyADH were able to reduce 23 class I substrates (1-aryl-2-nitro-1-ethanone (1)) and ten class II substrates (1-aryloxy-3-nitro-2-propanone (4)) to furnish both enantiomers of the corresponding -nitro alcohols, with good-to-excellent conversions (up to >99%) and enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee) being achieved in most cases. To the best of our knowledge, KRED-mediated reduction of class II -nitro ketones (1-aryloxy-3-nitro-2-propanone (4)) is unprecedented. Select -nitro alcohols, including the synthetic intermediates of bioactive molecules (R)-tembamide, (S)-tembamide, (S)-moprolol, (S)-toliprolol and (S)-propanolol, were stereoselectively synthesized in preparative scale with 42% to 90% isolated yields, showcasing the practical potential of our developed system in organic synthesis. Finally, the advantage of using KREDs with known sequence was demonstrated by whole-cell catalysis, in which -nitro alcohol (R)-2k, the key synthetic intermediate of hypoglycemic natural product (R)-tembamide, was produced in a space-time yield of 178 g L-1 d(-1) as well as 95% ee by employing the whole cells of a recombinant E. coli strain coexpressing RasADH and glucose dehydrogenase as the biocatalyst.

A novel one-pot reaction of carboxylic acids, ynol ethers, and m-CPBA for the synthesis of alpha-carbonyloxy esters in the presence of Ag2O is described. This process provides a direct approach to alpha-carbonyloxy esters with the achievement of formation of three C-O bonds. N-Acylpyrrole-type amides are a class of versatile building blocks in asymmetric synthesis. We report that by employing Ni(COD)(2)/2,2 ‘-bipyridine (5 mol%) catalytic system, the direct, catalytic alcoholysis of N-acylpyrrole-type aromatic and aliphatic amides with both primary and secondary alcohols can be achieved efficiently under very mild conditions (rt, 1 h) even at gram scale. By increasing the catalyst loading to 10 mol%, prolonging reaction time (18 h), and/or elevating reaction temperature to 50 degrees C/80 degrees C, the reaction could be extended to both complex and hindered N-acylpyrroles as well as to N-acylpyrazoles, Nacylindoles, and to other (functionalized) primary and secondary alcohols. In all cases, only 1.5 equiv. of alcohol were used. The value of the method has been demonstrated by the racemization-free, catalytic alcoholysis of chiral amides yielded from other asymmetric methodologies.

A covalent hybrid of halloysite-poly(methyl methacrylate-co-maleic anhydride) was prepared and applied for the immobilization of Pd nanoparticles. Design of chemically novel, biologically potent small heterocyclic molecules with anticancer activities, which targets the enzyme heparanase has gained prominent clinical interest. We have synthesized a novel class of carboxamide derivatives by coupling various substituted aromatic acid hydrazides and triazoleamine with pyrrolidine carboxylic acid by using coupling agents. The synthesized compounds are characterized by spectroscopic techniques such as FT-IR, DIMS and NMR. These compounds arc investigated for cytotoxicity on different cancer cell lines and heparanase inhibitory activity. Most of them showed moderate heparanase inhibitory activity and good cytotoxicity.
