Fluorescent silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) displayed different emission wavelengths have been synthesized, but it has not been reported that the preparation of wavelength controllable SiNPs by adjusting the nitrogen content of reducing agents. In this paper, the wavelength-controlled fluorescent SiNPs were prepared by selecting the dopamine (DA) with nitrogen content between catechol and 2-aminophenol as the reducing agent and N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl]-ethylenediamine (DAMO) as the silicon source via one-step hydrothermal method. The emission wavelength of the prepared SiNPs was in direct proportion to the nitrogen content in the reducing agent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time for exploring the nitrogen content in reducing agents could affect the optical properties of SiNPs so far. In addition, the obtained SiNPs could be applied to determinate 2-nitrophenol (2-NP). Based on the combination action of inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching effect (SQE) mechanism, a wide linear range was obtained from 0.1 to 500 mu M, and the limit of detection was 0.029 mu M for 2-NP, which was comparable to or even lower than some previous reports. This SiNPs probe was also successfully employed for sensing of 2-NP in industrial effluent with satisfactory results (98.6%-103.4%).

Chiral total syntheses of all six insecticidal natural pyrethrins (three pyrethrin I and three pyrethrin II compounds) contained in the chrysanthemum (pyrethrum) flower were performed. Three common alcohol components [(S)-cinerolone, (S)-jasmololone, and (S)-pyrethrolone] were synthesized: (i) straightforward Sonogashira-type cross-couplings using available (S)-4-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-(2-propynyl)cyclopent-2-en-1-ones (the prallethrin alcohol) for (S)-cinerolone (overall 52% yield, 98% ee) and (S)-pyrethrolone (overall 54% yield, 98% ee) and (ii) traditional decarboxylative-aldol condensation and lipase-catalyzed optical resolution for (S)-jasmololone (overall 16% yield, 96% ee). Two counter acid segments [(1R,3R)-chrysanthemic acid (A) and (1R,3R)-second chrysanthemic acid precursor (B)] were prepared: (i) C(1) epimerization of ethyl (+/-)-chrysanthemates and optical resolution using (S)-naphthylethylamine to afford A (96% ee) and (ii) concise derivatization of A to B (96% ee). All six pyrethrin esters (cinerin I/II, jasmolin I/II, and pyrethrin I/II) were successfully synthesized utilizing an accessible esterification reagent (TsCl/N-methylimidazole). To investigate the stereostructure-activity relationship, all four chiral stereoisomers of cinerin I were synthesized. Three alternative syntheses of (+/-)-jasmololone were investigated (methods utilizing Piancatelli rearrangement, furan transformation, and 1-nitropropene transformation). Insecticidal activity assay (KD50 and IC50) against the common mosquito (Culex pipiens pallens) revealed that (i) pyrethrin I > pyrethrin II, (ii) pyrethrin I (II) >> cinerin I (II) >> jasmolin I (II), and (iii) natural cinerin I >> three unnatural cinerin I compounds (apparent chiral discrimination).

A simple, efficient, sustainable and economical method for the oxidation of alcohols and amines has been developed based on chloride, a sea abundant anionic catalyst for the practical synthesis of a wide range of carboxylic acids, ketones and imines. Oxidation of aromatic alcohols was carried out using NaCl (20 mol%) as the catalyst, NaOH (50 mol%) and aq. TBHP (4 equiv.) as the oxidant in 55-92% isolated yields. Oxidation of aromatic amines to imines was achieved by using only 20 mol% of NaCl and aq. TBHP (4 equiv.) in 32-93% isolated yields. The chlorine species formed during the reaction as the active oxidation catalyst has been identified as ClO2- for alcohols and ClO-/ClO2- for amines by control experiments. This method is mostly free from chromatographic purification, which makes it suitable for large-scale synthesis. We have scaled up to 30 gram scale the synthesis of carboxylic acids and imines in good yields and have also carried out efficiently this new method using filtered sea water as the solvent and catalyst.

Galactose Oxidase (GOase) and catechol oxidase (COase) are the metalloenzymes of copper having monomeric and dimeric sites of coordination, respectively. This paper summarizes the results of our studies on the structural, spectral and catalytic properties of new mononuclear copper (II) complexes [CuL(OAc)] (1), and [CuL2] (2), (HL = 2,4-dichloro-6-{[(2′-dimethyl-aminoethyl)methylamino]methyl}-phenol) which can mimic the functionalities of the metalloenzymes GOase and COase. The structure of the compounds has been elucidated by X-ray crystallography and the mimicked Cu(II) catalysts were further characterized by EPR. These mimicked models were used for GOase and COase catalysis. The GOase catalytic results were identified by GC MS and, analyzed by HPLC at room temperature. The conversion of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde were significant in presence of a strong base, Bu4NOMe in comparison to the neutral medium. Apart from that, despite of being monomeric in nature, both the homogeneous catalysts are very prone to participate in COase mimicking oxidation reaction. Nevertheless, during COase catalysis, complex 1 was found to convert 3,5-ditertarybutyl catechol (3,5-DTBC) to 3,5-ditertarybutyl quinone (3,5-DTBQ) having greater rate constant, k(cat) or turn over number (TON) value over complex 2. The generation of reactive intermediates during COase catalysis were accounted by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Through mechanistic approach, we found that H2O2 is the byproduct for both the GOase and COase catalysis, thus, confirming the generation of reactive oxygen species during catalysis. Notably, complex 1 having mono-ligand coordinating atmosphere has superior catalytic activity for both cases in comparison to complex 2, that is having di-ligand environment.

Boronic esters are versatile building blocks extensively used in organic chemistry and essential to a variety of coupling reactions. In this work, the hydroboration reactions of alkynes were performed without metal catalysts using concomitant microwave irradiation that allowed a significantly reduced reaction time. Another interesting outcome of this study was that the reaction could be carried out under solvent-free conditions, highlighting the environmentally-friendly nature of our method. The theoretical study focused on the possible use of low-molecular-weight mono-as well as multifunctional terminal alkynes as catalysts for two reactions, which are known to be typically acid catalyzed – acetalization and esterification, is presented in this study. Multifunctional terminal alkynes [(diethynylbenzenes, triethynylbenzene, and tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)methane] were significantly more active than the monofunctional ones (cyclopropylacetylene, phenylacetylene, 3-cyclohexylprop-1-yne, 1-ethynyl-2-fluorobenzene, 1-ethynyl-4-fluorobenzene, 4-ethynyltoluene, 4-tert-butylphenylacetylene, and 2-ethynyl-alpha,alpha,alpha-trifluorotoluene), this fact can be partly explained by the higher amount of ethynyl groups per alkyne molecule. We confirmed that terminal ethynyl groups in low-molecular-weight alkynes can successfully act as acid catalytic centers for acetalization as well as for esterification. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
