Investigation of the copper-catalyzed coupling reaction of 2-pyridinesulfonates with Grignard reagents revealed that reactions with catalytic Cu(OTf)(2) were completed in <40 min. The results differed from those of the previous CuI-catalyzed reactions of tosylates in the presence of additives (LiOMe and TMEDA) for 12-24 h. It was shown that the preferred coordination of the leaving group to the reagents accelerated the reaction. Successful reagents were MeMgCl and other RMgX. Complete inversion was established. Activation of carbonyl moiety is one of the most rudimentary approaches in organic synthesis and is crucial for a plethora of industrial-scale condensation reactions. In esterification and aldol condensation, which represent two of the most important reactions, the susceptibility of the carbonyl group to nucleophile attack allows the construction of a variety of useful organic compounds. In this context, there is a constant need for development of and improvement in the methods for addition-elimination reactions via activation of carbonyl functionality. In this paper, an advanced methodology for the direct esterification of carboxylic acids and alcohols, and for aldol condensation of aldehydes using widely available, inexpensive, and metal-free 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin under neat reaction conditions is reported. The method is air- and moisture-tolerant, allowing simple synthetic and isolation procedures for both reactions presented in this paper. The reaction pathway for esterification is proposed and a scale-up of certain industrially important derivatives is performed.

Four 2,4-disubstituted quinazoline series containing various amide moieties were designed and synthesized as new anti-influenza A virus agents using the strategies of bio-isosterism and scaffold hopping. Many of them exhibit potent in vitro anti-influenza A virus activity and low cytotoxicity (CC50: > 100 mu M). Particularly, compounds 10a5 and 17a show better activity (IC50: 3.70-4.19 mu M) and higher selective index (SI: > 27.03, > 23.87, respectively) against influenza A/WSN/33 virus (H1N1), opening a new direction for quinazoline derivatives in anti-influenza A virus field.

A novel strategy for the recognition of anions in water using charge-neutral a-hole halogen and chalcogen bonding acyclic hosts is demonstrated for the first time. Exploiting the intrinsic hydrophobicity of halogen and chalcogen bond donor atoms integrated into a foldamer structural molecular framework containing hydrophilic functionalities, a series of water-soluble receptors was constructed for an anion recognition investigation. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) binding studies with a range of anions revealed the receptors to display very strong and selective binding of large, wealdy hydrated anions such as I- and ReO4-. This is achieved through the formation of 2:1 host-guest stoichiometric complex assemblies, resulting in an encapsulated anion stabilized by cooperative, multidentate, convergent a-hole donors, as shown by molecular dynamics simulations carried out in water. Importantly, the combination of multiple sigma-hole-anion interactions and hydrophobic collapse results in I- affinities in water that exceed all known a-hole receptors, including cationic systems (beta(2) up to 1.68 X 10(11) M-2). Furthermore, the anion binding affinities and selectivity trends of the first example of an all-chalcogen bonding anion receptor in pure water are compared with halogen bonding and hydrogen bonding receptor analogues. These results further advance and establish halogen and chalcogen bond donor functions as new tools for overcoming the challenging goal of anion recognition in pure water.

Organocatalytic asymmetric Michael addition between 3-substituted oxindoles and enals catalyzed by chiral camphor sulfonyl hydrazines (CaSHs) has been developed. Copper (II) immobilized on L-arginine-beta-cyclodextrin-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (nano-Fe3O4@L-arginine-CD-Cu(II)) were successfully synthesized and fully characterized using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, ICP, TGA and VSM techniques. An artificial flavin system has been firstly proved to employ an N(5)-adduct for a catalytic transformation. This mode of catalysis occurs in some flavoenzymes but it is unknown in chemocatalysis, still exclusively using only C(4a)-adducts. In our report, an ethylene-bridged biomimetic flavin has been shown to participate in the Mitsunobu esterification reaction as an alternative to dialkyl azodicarboxylate. The reaction occurs via a flavin N(5)-triphenylphosphane adduct and is catalytic from the point of view of the flavin, which is regenerated by oxygen. This approach distinguishes from other catalytic Mitsunobu reaction procedures which require an extra catalytic system.

Bronsted acidic ionic liquids (BAILs) have been used as catalyst and solvent in organic synthesis, due to their negligible volatility, remarkable solubility, good catalytic activity, and easily structurally tunable properties.
