Direct utilization of the abundant hydrogen in water for the transfer hydrogenation reaction (THR) is a very attractive and challenging research area. Herein, we report the first integrated photo-transfer hydrogenation reaction (PTHR) platform for the synthesis of benzhydrol derivatives (26 examples, 33-89% yields) with water as a green reducing agent. This transformation is time and labor-efficient, catalyst-free, and economical and utilizes readily available hydrocarbon(s) (o-methyl phenyl ketones) as starting materials.

The present report describes an organocatalytic cascade reaction between 2-alkylidene benzo[b]thiophenone derivatives and enones in the presence of the Cinchona alkaloid amine. Spirobenzothiophenonic cyclohexane derivatives containing three stereocenters were prepared via one-step synthesis in yields ranging from 88 to 96% and in enantioselectivities (enantiomeric excess (ee)) ranging from 85 to 97%, with diastereoselectivities of approximately 14/2/1. Therefore, this method provides an efficient route for the synthesis of a new class of optically active 2-spirobenzothiophenones.

A site-selective supported palladium nanoparticle catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction with heteroaryl esters and arylboronic acids as coupling partners was developed. This methodology provides a heterogeneous catalytic route for aryl ketone formation via C(acyl)-O bond activation of esters by successful suppression of the undesired decarbonylation phenomenon. The catalyst can be reused and shows high activity after eight cycles. Overexpression of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is associated with the occurrence and development of obesity and insulin resistance. Herein, a series of coumarin-based ALDH1A1 inhibitors were designed, synthesized and evaluated. Among them, compounds 10, 14 and 26 exhibited potent inhibitory activity against ALDH1A1 and high selectivity over ALDH1A2, ALDH1A3, ALDH2 and ALDH3A1. Optimized compound 10 showed markedly improved pharmacokinetic characters and ADME profiles comparing to the lead compound 1. The development of sub-nanometric metal particles (<1 nm) as advanced heterogeneous catalysts has received considerable interest due to their outstanding catalytic performance, while the synthesis and stabilization of sub-nanometric catalysts (SNCs) without using additional surface capping agents remains a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of novel three-dimensional pyrenyl graphdiyne (Pyr-GDY) ultrafine nanofibers (3-10 nm), which can serve as an ideal substrate for electroless deposition and stabilization of Pd SNCs through the terminal uncoupled acetenyl groups in Pyr-GDY, with an average Pd particle size of only 0.83 nm. The as-synthesized Pd/Pyr-GDY composite shows extremely high catalytic activities for the reduction of nitroarenes to arylamines and Suzuki coupling reactions, 300 and 25 times higher than those of commercial Pd/C, respectively. The outstanding catalytic performance can be ascribed to the sub-nanometric Pd particles with a clean surface, and the unique three-dimensional network structure of Pyr-GDY, being favorable for rapid mass transfer. Our result provides an ideal carbon material for electroless deposition and stabilization of other SNCs with a clean surface, which will display outstanding catalytic activity for various catalytic reactions. Organocatalytic asymmetric Michael addition between 3-substituted oxindoles and enals catalyzed by chiral camphor sulfonyl hydrazines (CaSHs) has been developed. A wide range of 3-substituted oxindoles and enals were successfully used, giving the corresponding 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles containing vicinal stereogenic carbon centers in good yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities and moderate to good diastereoselectivities (up to 89% yield, 99% ee and 99 : 1 dr).

A convenient and efficient strategy for the synthesis of 2-acyl benzothiazoles/thiazoles has been developed. The treatment of benzothiazole/thiazole with allylic Grignard reagents readily generates the corresponding 2-Grignard reagents, which is followed by a reaction with N,N’-carbonyldiimidazole activated carboxylic acids to afford various 2-acyl benzothiazoles/thiazoles products. The synthetic method is applicable to a wide array of carboxylic acids and allows easy access to 2-acyl benzothiazoles/thiazoles with considerable yields under mild reaction conditions. The development of a novel Z-scheme system with a high separation efficiency of the charge carriers for remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity is highly desirable. Herein, a carbon quantum dot-modified SnNb2O6/BiOCl (CQD-SNO/BOC) Z-scheme system, in which the CQDs acted as a bridge for the charge carriers, was successfully synthesized. As expected, the CQDs acted as a bridge for the charge carriers that could separate and accumulate electrons from SnNb2O6 and holes from BiOCl by promoting the transfer of the photoinduced charge carriers, which enabled the BiOCl holes to maintain their high oxidation capability. Additionally, the CQDs not only endowed the SNO/BOC Z-scheme system with a large specific surface area that provided a greater number of active sites but also noticeably improved its visible light absorption capacity. Therefore, the CQDSNO/BOC Z-scheme system showed an improved photocatalytic performance for the degradation of benzocaine (BC), which was over 20 times, 10 times and 2 times greater than those of BiOCl, SnNb2O6 and SNO/BOC Z-scheme systems, respectively. In addition, the effects of catalyst concentration, pH value, different anions, and humic acid (HA) concentration on the photodegradation of BC were investigated in depth. Simultaneously, a four-stage pathway for the degradation of BC was proposed based on the degradation products that were identified, and the accuracy of this pathway was further verified based on biotoxicity assessments and toxicity predictions of the products. According to the ESR spectra and active species trapping experiments, a mechanism for the CQD-SNO/BOC Z-scheme system was proposed, in which the CQD bridge accelerated charge transfer. Based on these results, the CQD-modified Z-scheme system could be an efficient and promising photocatalyst for the degradation of PPCPs in water.
