Homogeneous Composite Nonwoven Support for High Temperature-Resistant Separation Membranes

High temperature-resistant separation membranes are widely considered in various fields. However, incompetent support layer limits the performance of high temperature-resistant membranes severely. In this work, a homogeneous composite nonwoven support (HCNS) is developed by wet-laid and hot-pressing technology using undrawn polyethylene terephthalate fibers as bonding fibers. The significance of hot-pressing parameters on the performances of the HCNS is investigated, and quadratic regression models are established. The HCNS exhibits a smooth surface (roughness of 118 nm) and a porous structure (porosity of 21.06% and pore size of 6.548 mu m) with a mechanical property (tensile index of 45.80 N m g(-1)). The ultrafiltration membranes supported by the HCNS are prepared from poly(phthalazine ether sulfone ketone), which demonstrates high permeance, high rejection rate, and long-term stability at raised operation temperature, thereby suggesting the potential application of HCNS in high-temperature filtration.

Anticancer activity assessment of two novel binuclear platinum (II) complexes

In the current study, two binuclear Pt (II) complexes, containing cis, cis-[Me2Pt (mu-NN) (mu-dppm) PtMe2] (1), and cis,cis-[Me2Pt(mu-NN)(mu dppm,) Pt((CH2)(4))] (2) in which NN = phthalazine and dppm = bis (diphenylphosphino) methane were evaluated for their anticancer activities and DNA/purine nucleotide binding properties. These Pt (II) complexes, with the non-classical structures, demonstrated a significant anticancer activity against Jurkat and MCF-7 cancer cell lines. The results of ethidium bromide/acridine orange staining and Caspase-III activity suggest that these complexes were capable to stimulate an apoptotic mechanism of cell death in the cancer cells. Using different biophysical techniques and docking simulation analysis, we indicated that these complexes were also capable to interact efficiently with DNA via a non-intercalative mechanism. According to our results, substitution of cyclopentane (in complex 2) with two methyl groups (in complex 1) results in significant improvement of the complex ability to interact with DNA and subsequently to induce the anticancer activity. Overall, these binuclear Pt (II) complexes are promising group of the non-classical potential anticancer agents which can be considered as molecular templates in designing of highly efficient platinum anticancer drugs. Aldehyde oxidase (AOX) is a cytosolic enzyme responsible for the metabolism of some drugs and drug candidates. In this study, we used 5-nitroquinoline (5NQ) as a substrate to further understand both the oxidative and the reductive transformations catalyzed by AOX. In vitro reaction of 5NQ with AOX under aerobic conditions generated the oxidized (2-oxo-5-nitroquinoline, 2-oxo-5NQ), the reduced (5-aminoquinoline, 5AQ) and the oxidized/reduced (2-oxo-5-aminoquinoline, 2-oxo-5AQ) metabolites. Interestingly, in human liver cytosol, co-incubation of 5NQ and known AOX oxidative substrates DACA and phthalazine significantly increased the yield of the reduced metabolite, while oxidized metabolites production decreased. These data indicate that 5NQ can be reduced at atmospheric oxygen concentrations and that the reductive transformation occurs at a second site that is kinetically distinct from the oxidative site. A novel chromogenic and fluorogenic chemosensor for detection of trace water in methanol

A novel receptor (E)-1-(phthalazine-4-yl)-2-(1-(pyridine-2-yl) ethylidene) hydrazine (3) was developed for the detection of trace water content present in methanol. Upon interaction of water molecule with receptor 3, there appears a significant color change from colorless to yellow green and the absorption band at 355 nm was shifted to 435 nm (i.e. bathochromic or red shift) due to selective encapsulation of water molecule at 1-(pthalazine-4-yl) hydrazine-NH and imine groups leading to tautomeric transformation in the ground state which is caused by an intramolecular proton transfer. Also, there was remarkable enhancement in fluorescence intensity of 3 in methanol upon addition of water. Molecular dynamic and quantum chemical calculations for phthalazine derivatives as corrosion inhibitors of mild steel in 1 M HCl

The abilities of phthalazine derivatives, including phthalazine (PT), phthalazone (PTO) and phthalhydrazide (PTD), to inhibit the corrosion of mild steel in 1 M HCl at 30 degrees C were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. Theoretical calculations were performed to investigate the electronic structures of the PT derivatives. Our results showed that the inhibition efficiencies of these derivatives improved with increases in concentration. The data also showed that PTD < PT < PTO in terms of the inhibiting efficiency.
