Catalysts that control stereochemistry are prized tools in chemical synthesis. When an effective catalyst is found, it is often explored for other types of reactions, frequently under the auspices of different mechanisms. As successes mount, a unique catalyst scaffold may become viewed as privileged. However, the mechanistic hallmarks of privileged catalysts are not easily enumerated or readily generalized to genuinely different classes of reactions or substrates. We explored the concept of scaffold uniqueness with two catalyst types for an unusual atropisomerselective cyclodehydration: (a) C-2-symmetric chiral phosphoric acids and (b) phosphothreonine-embedded, peptidic phosphoric acids. Pragmatically, both catalyst scaffolds proved fertile for enantioselective/atroposelective cyclodehydrations. Mechanistic studies revealed that the determinants of often equivalent and high atroposelectivity are different for the two catalyst classes. A data-descriptive classification of these asymmetric catalysts reveals an increasingly broad set of catalyst chemotypes, operating with different mechanistic features, that creates new opportunities for broad and complementary application of catalyst scaffolds in diverse substrate space.

Moreover, the solid catalyst is easily be separated from the reaction mixture and recycled more than five times without any obvious decay in its activity. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-DRS) and Raman analyses revealed identical structural integrity, particle size, absorption edge and valence state for the reused solid compared to the fresh solid catalyst.

This paper described a mild and efficient direct amidation of non-activated carboxylic acid and amine derivatives catalyzed by TiCp2Cl2. Arylacetic acid derivatives reacted with different amines to afford the corresponding amides in good to excellent yield except of aniline. Aryl formic acids failed to react with aniline but smoothly reacted with aliphatic amines and benzylamine in moderate to good yield, fatty acids reacting with benzyl and aliphatic amines give amides in good to excellent yield. Chiral amino acids derivatives were transformed into amides without racemization in moderate yield. The possible mechanism of direct amidation catalyzed by TiCp2Cl2 was discussed. This catalytic method is very suitable for the amidation of low sterically hindered arylacetic acid, fatty acids with different low sterically hindered amines except aniline, as well as the amidation of aryl formic acid with benzyl and aliphatic amines.

A covalent hybrid of halloysite-poly(methyl methacrylate-co-maleic anhydride) was prepared and applied for the immobilization of Pd nanoparticles. The hybrid system, Pd@Hal-Gua-Poly, was then characterized via TEM, TGA, ICP, BET, FTIR and XRD and successfully used as a heterogeneous catalyst for promoting two main Pd-catalyzed reactions, i.e. hydrogenation of nitro-arenes and Suzuki coupling reaction under mild and eco-friendly conditions. The study of recyclability of the catalyst confirmed high recyclability and low Pd leaching of Pd@Hal-Gua-Poly. Moreover, the hot-filtration test showed the heterogeneous nature of the catalysts. Notably, the comparison of the activity of the catalyst with that of Pd@Hal and Pd@Poly confirmed the superior catalytic activity of the former, indicating that the hybridization of Hal and Poly could lead to the improvement of the catalytic activity. In the present study, a series of substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives 4(a-o), 5(a-m) and 6(a-j) were synthesized and characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and mass spectroscopic technique. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro anti-mycobacterial activity against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and resistance MDR-TB strain. Among the compounds tested N-(5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)furan-2-carboxamide (4h) showed significant inhibitory activity with MIC of 9.87 mu M (H37Rv strain) and 9.87 mu M (MDR-TB strain) compared to isoniazide (MIC of 3.64 mu M (H37Rv) and >200 mu M (MDR-TB strain)] and rifampin [MIC of 0.152 mu M (H37Rv) and 128 mu M (MDR-TB strain)]. In addition, these compounds have also been assessed for their cyto-toxicity to a mammalian Vero cell line using the MTT assay. The result shows that these compounds exhibit anti-tubercular activity at non-cytototoxic concentrations. (C) 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

We describe a methodology for the amidation of carboxylic acids by generating phosphonium salts in situ from N-chlorophthalimide and triphenylphosphine. Aliphatic, benzylic, and aromatic carboxylic acids can be transformed into their amide counter parts using primary and secondary amines. This functional group interconversion is achieved at room temperature in good to excellent yields. Mechanistic work shows the in situ formation of chloro- and imido-phosphonium salts that react as activating agents for carboxylic acids and generate an acyloxyphosphonium species.

In the present work, MnO2@Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been prepared via a simple coprecipitation method and characterized successfully. Two products are formed from benzyl alcohol oxidation over MnO2@Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH): benzaldehyde and benzoic acid. This oxidation was carried out with three different parameters: oxidant, solvent, and temperature. In addition, MnO2@Mg-Al LDHs could be easily recovered and reused for five times without any loss of activity.
