The ring-opening copolymerization of carbon dioxide and epoxides is a useful means to make aliphatic polycarbonates and to add-value to CO2. Recently, the first heterodinuclear Zn(II)/Mg(II) catalyst showed greater activity than either homodinuclear analogue (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2015, 137, 15078-15081). Building from this preliminary finding, here, eight new Zn(II)/Mg(II) heterodinuclear catalysts featuring carboxylate co-ligands are prepared and characterized. The best catalysts show very high activities for copolymerization using cyclohexene oxide (TOF 1/4 8880 h 1, 20 bar CO2, 120 C, 0.01 mol% catalyst loading) or cyclopentene oxide. All the catalysts are highly active in the low pressure regime and specifically at 1 bar pressure CO2. The polymerization kinetics are analysed using in situ spectroscopy and aliquot techniques: the rate law is overall second order with a first order dependence in both catalyst and epoxide concentrations and a zero order in carbon dioxide pressure. The pseudo first order rate coefficient values are compared for the catalyst series and differences are primarily attributed to effects on initiation rates. The data are consistent with a chain shuttling mechanistic hypothesis with heterodinuclear complexes showing particular rate enhancements by optimizing distinct roles in the catalytic cycles. The mechanistic hypothesis should underpin future heterodinuclear catalyst design for use both in other (co) polymerization and carbon dioxide utilization reactions.

Fluorescent silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) displayed different emission wavelengths have been synthesized, but it has not been reported that the preparation of wavelength controllable SiNPs by adjusting the nitrogen content of reducing agents. In this paper, the wavelength-controlled fluorescent SiNPs were prepared by selecting the dopamine (DA) with nitrogen content between catechol and 2-aminophenol as the reducing agent and N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl]-ethylenediamine (DAMO) as the silicon source via one-step hydrothermal method. The emission wavelength of the prepared SiNPs was in direct proportion to the nitrogen content in the reducing agent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time for exploring the nitrogen content in reducing agents could affect the optical properties of SiNPs so far. In addition, the obtained SiNPs could be applied to determinate 2-nitrophenol (2-NP). Based on the combination action of inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching effect (SQE) mechanism, a wide linear range was obtained from 0.1 to 500 mu M, and the limit of detection was 0.029 mu M for 2-NP, which was comparable to or even lower than some previous reports. This SiNPs probe was also successfully employed for sensing of 2-NP in industrial effluent with satisfactory results (98.6%-103.4%).

An operationally simple isothiourea-catalysed acylative kinetic resolution of unprotected 1,1 ‘-biaryl-2,2 ‘-diol derivatives has been developed to allow access to axially chiral compounds in highly enantioenriched form (s values up to 190). Investigation of the reaction scope and limitations provided three key observations: i) the diol motif of the substrate was essential for good conversion and high s values; ii) the use of an alpha,alpha-disubstituted mixed anhydride (2,2-diphenylacetic pivalic anhydride) was critical to minimize diacylation and give high selectivity; iii) the presence of substituents in the 3,3 ‘-positions of the diol hindered effective acylation. This final observation was exploited for the highly regioselective acylative kinetic resolution of unsymmetrical biaryl diol substrates bearing a single 3-substituent. Based on the key observations identified, acylation transition state models have been proposed to explain the atropselectivity of this kinetic resolution.

A magnetic catalyst is synthesized through growth of dendrimer of generation 3 (G3) on the surface of halloysite (Hal) nanotubes followed by decoration of dendrimer terminal groups with ionic liquid (IL) and incorporation of Fe species. The structure of the catalyst was confirmed by using several characterization techniques. Moreover, the catalytic activity of the catalyst for oxidation of benzaldehydes to the corresponding benzoic acids in the presence of hydrogen peroxide was investigated. Notably, to improve the yield of the reaction, beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) was employed as phase transfer agent. The contribution of dendrimer and IL to the catalysis was confirmed by comparing the catalytic activity of the catalyst with that of control the catalysts (the catalyst without IL, Fe species and dendrimer). Furthermore, the effect of dendrimer generation was elucidated by comparing the catalytic activities of the catalysts prepared by growth of dendrimers of G1, G2 and G3 on Hal. Studying the recyclability of the catalyst, it was found that the catalyst could be recovered and recycled for several reaction times with slight loss of leaching of Fe species.

This alpha,gamma-regioselective reaction afforded multifunctional carbocyclic oxindoles via dienamine-enamine cascade reaction followed by isomerization. Conventional luminescent sensors relying on single emission responsive to analytes demonstrate limited sensitivity and selectivity and developing novel self-calibration probes is highly required. A series of water-stable coordination polymers (CPs) with three emitting centers for tunable emissions is reported. They are facilely synthesized by simultaneously doping red-emitting Eu3+ and green-emitting Tb3+ into the same framework. The versatile Eu0.67Tb0.33-CP is applied to conveniently distinguishing different nitroaromatics pollutants and multidimensional ratiometric sensing CrO42-/Cr2O72-. Specific nitroaromatics can cause unique changes to the ligand -> Eu3+/Tb3+ energy transfer efficiency, while CrO42-/Cr2O72- intriguingly quench the three emissions at different rates. Each nitroaromatic exhibits notably correlation to a unique combination of the two ligand -> Eu3+/Tb3+ emission intensity ratios, enabling a 2D fingerprint recognition. Furthermore, the concentration-dependent evolution of the two ratios upon exposure to CrO42-/Cr2O72- can be mapped out, achieving a 3D code recognition. As a result, the sensor demonstrates selective recognition of 4-nitrophenol and CrO42-/Cr2O72- with high sensitivity and selectivity as well as great recycling ability. Both the synthetic and sensing strategies present a promising strategy to develop facile and effective ratiometric sensors.

The reaction of 2-chloro-6,7-dimethoxy-3-nitroquinoline with a series of amines and aminoalkanoates under basic microwave-mediated conditions and under Buchwald-Hartwig amination conditions is reported. In the present study, iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 MNPs) were synthesized in a green biosynthetic manner using aqueous extract of clover leaves. Fe3O4 MNPs were applied as a magnetically separable nanocatalyst for the green syntheses of functionalized [1,3]-oxazoles 1(a-e) and 1H-pyrrolo-[1,3]-oxazoles 4(a-i) as promising antioxidant compounds in excellent yields at 50 degrees C and room temperature, respectively. The antioxidant activities of the most stable compounds (1a, 1b, 4a, and 4b) were evaluated by both 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging and ferric reduction activity potential assays.
